L-101 Laboratory Systems

The L-101 laboratory is equipped with nine Dell Optiplex 755 "lunchbox" computers. You may find the specifications here. All are loaded with 64-bit Ubuntu Linux 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex). They also offer 32-bit VMware-hosted virtual machines running Ubuntu Linux 8.10 or Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

If the software loaded on the native Ubuntu environment suits your needs, you may work directly in that environment; if not, you should clone a virtual machine and work in that. For example, if you need to run Microsoft Office, you will find it installed in the Windows XP virtual machine. What is more, if you need a package that is not installed, you may install yourself, as you have full local administrator privileges in the virtual environment. Similarly, if you wish to experiment with a web site — perhaps even mounting an attack on it, you may do this in the virtual Ubuntu environment, which is pre-configured as a LAMP server. And, should you totally wreck your virtual environment, you can just start again in a new clone.
